Get into the Backcountry

Dependable and Comfortable Equipment

There's nothing like seeing 10,000 stars above you, holding a warm cup- and a back that doesn't hurt too badly. This is one sport where you absolutely cannot compromise on good gear. You will learn to rely on yourself as well as your group. Try things out before you go. Be honest with how much you can handle, and with time you'll be conquering longer and more amazing trails.

Pack Smart, Pack Light

Backpacking Gear

Getting Started

You'll need an Internal Frame Backpack and some good friends. Remember lightweight is key for everything- hiking boots, tent, sleeping bag/pad, stove.. Chipmunks don't have what you left at home so plan carefully.

Tried and True Items

Team Favorites

Internal Frame Pack

  • Internal Frame Backpacks: 55L - 75L capacity fits most needs

  • Osprey brand with anti-gravity mesh is our favorite

  • Fit is important. Shops, tutorials, and others can help you adjust your new pack, and plan weight placement.

Sleeping Bags

Sleeping Pads

Tents

  • There are lots of good options: search Lightweight Tents

  • Split weight of shared items like tents among group

  • Pay for quality. Everyone's needs are different, but broken zippers or ripped rain flies will make for a terrible time in inclement weather.

  • Footprint Tarps offer extra durability. Ultra-light shelters have some trade-offs but are excellent choices to cut ounces.

Water Filters

Cooking Stoves

Bug Repellent and Anti-Chafing products are not to be overlooked. Simple baby powder also works to reduce friction while hiking. Put something on early (inner thighs, arpmits, other rub areas). We'd rather you avoid the embarrassment of the "cowboy swagger".

You still need to poop, unfortunately. Get a trowel, it's good karma to do it right. Biodegradable body wipes are also great while we are on this topic.
Pack first aid supplies along with over-the-counter medications (such as anti-diarrheal, NSAIDS, Antihistamines) and as always, read the directions.

Thanks And Go Conquer Your Mountains!!

These ice cleats were literal LIFE SAVERS on our last trip!!! We bought them at trailhead price and were still thankful. They are very light and fit securely. A new must-have for us if there is any chance of packed snow.

Good socks just make people happier, no arguments. Footwear is important, check out lightweight hiking boots and get something comfortable and movable without sacrificing good support.
Digital scales are great to check out your gear weight before getting on the trail.
