The Katadyn pump handle is faster and more innate than push/pull style filters. This brand also attaches to Nalgene bottles, which is convenient. I bought a 3/16" tube splice to lengthen the inlet hose to filter while standing.
Survivor Filter kit is very affordable and requires almost no maintenance.

Katadyn Vario Filter. Can Screw onto a Nalgene Bottle for convenience. Pump style handle is amazing. I bought a 3/16 in. barb (tube splice) to connect the "outlet" and "inlet" hose for 1 longer hose. Allowing me to stand during use (Use a Nalgene bottle this way).

Simple, easy to pack, essentially no cleaning or maintenance. It allows filtering water on the go. I have used these on some backpacking trips with the kids. Great emergency item as well!

Hot food is a must. Quick boil stoves can be shared between several people. Grab some freeze dried meals and a long titanium spoon and lets go.
