Must Haves For The Backcountry

General Backpacking Gear, *Lightweight Items (Pack smart, pack light)

  • Backpacking Backpack ** link osprey

  • Lightweight Tent

  • Sleeping Bag, Sleeping Pad ** link pad, highlight ove r .5 inches thicker, few breaths.

  • Water Filter ** link Katadyn * link Drew's pouch filter(- Highlight- Screws directly onto classic Nalgene bottle! I bought a brass splice to connect the inlet and "outlet" hoses together- this gives me a 5 ft inlet hose so I can filter while standing. You will want to attach a Nalgene to catch the filtered water; just pour it into your other water reservoirs.

  • Cooking Stove (Don't forget fuel!) **Jetboil

  • First Aid kit and know how to perform basics

Clothing/Personal Items

  • Boots, Socks (bring extra, higher than boots), Clothing, Hat, Sunglasses

  • Rain Gear EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU DON'T NEED IT

  • Warm Clothing EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU DON'T NEED IT. (We suggest several lighter layers with a tough/wind-resistant outer layer)

  • Toiletries, Wipes, Medications (Rx, NSAIDs, anti-allergy, anti-diarrheal, etc.)
